Catty Screeches

Posted on Friday, June 19, 2009 at 03:08 am

There are a lot of stray cats around where I live. If I don’t see them, then I hear them. Every single damn night. Usually, it’s a whole lot of massive yowling and screaming in the throes of cat sexual ecstasy (or possibly a lot of pain in their case), but something must have gone wrong in the neighborhood catdom this night because the screeches didn’t sound quite the same (and I’ve gotten good at recognizing the various sounds cats make).

I looked out the window to see if I could spot what the screeches were about and just saw 5 or 6 cats on top of a car in the middle of a crazy cat fight. And there were 3 more running towards the car about to join them when I looked too. I’ve seen cats fight a little here or there, but I’ve never seen one in this scale. This one was more like a war. Insane is the word that comes to mind- and this is what people call women who fight, which I have to admit makes quite a bit of sense now that I’ve seen an actual cat fight. I maintain, though, that any woman left standing in a fight like that deserves a freaking medal.

I sat by my window staring at the cat fight for a good 5 minutes when I saw a small kitten pop out of the fray with another fairly large cat that kept hissing and spitting at any other cat that dared to approach. Some kind of victory must have occurred because the fight broke off then. That was when a few kitties crawled out from a bush nearby with another large cat that was apparently protecting them instead of joining in the fight.

I’m feeling really bad for the injured kitty that got caught in the fight though. It was limping quite a bit and the large cat was (I think) trying to lick it. I hope the kitty’s alright- I couldn’t see very well since I’m up on the 6th floor. On a different note, whoever is the owner of that car is going to be greeted with a nasty surprise tomorrow.

And that’s that. My lovely and completely pointless first update in almost a month. But it’s 3AM in the morning and I’m still drowning in projects more pointless than this post, courtesy of screwy corporate politics and a manager whose primary skill is to fuck things up. It almost makes me pissed off enough to jump into the aforementioned cat fight itself.

Besides, I was kinda fascinated by the fight.

“the throes of cat sexual ecstasy”

That gave me all kinds of mental imagery that I really DIDN’T need. :P

Reminds me of my neighborhood. All you see are stray cats and I can point out at least 4 generations, since most of them were born and still live in my backyard.

Its funny, yet sad (for the kitteh), but funny, because all I pictured was one street gang of cats and another about to duke it out for territory. Or just a mother cat protecting her young; they can be vicious when threatened.

I know, real life has taken a toll on my blogging frequency. That cat story was kinda cool, I’ve never seen anything like that.
