Impressions: The Anna K. Tarot

Posted on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 09:29 pm

Yes, after all that mulling, I decided to order the Anna K. deck for myself together with my sister’s copy last weekend. One of these days, I really should make a serious effort to curb my urges to buy yet more tarot decks… but with how special I found the Anna K. to be, I’ll insist it would’ve been a mistake to not order one while the supplies last!

Anna K. Tarot

Anyhow, my point today is that the decks arrived yesterday even though Anna had only sent it out (from Austria no less) on the 16th via standard mail… and I live in Taiwan! It was such an awesome surprise. :) My mouth is still hurting from the surgery I had a few days ago, so I haven’t given it as much attention as I would’ve done otherwise but here’s a “review” (Téa style because I like talking about my impressions and am simply no good at giving in-depth thoughts in an eloquent manner)...

  • The deck arrived in a thin flip-top box with the cards lying flat, split in two stacks and held together by a black string, plus a booklet (in German only). Anna has an English version of the booklet available in a PDF file, so do remember to ask for it. It’s certainly worth the read and unlike the usual chuck-worthy LWBs out there.
  • Some people had mentioned that the cards turned out to be much darker than the pictures shown on Anna’s site, but I thought it was fine for the most part. A few cards were darker than expected, but in most instances, I don’t mind. The Moon was really dark, but I actually liked it that way. The downside for some cards might be the difficulty in seeing the details of “what’s happening” in the picture. One example that comes to mind is the Knight of Cups. I was having a hard time making out what he was doing exactly and what he was holding (a rose?). My sister actually thought it was blood… heh. Overall, though, the colors are simply wonderful!
  • You can ask Anna to sign your deck, which I did- making this my first signed deck ever. Unfortunately, she misspelled my name and I ended up being “Thea” instead (as you can see in the picture below). It would’ve been great if not for the mistake, but it’s okay… I don’t mind it too terribly and it’s kinda a bit funny anyway.

Signed as Thea

  • The card stock, as promised, is not coated and shiny like the mass-produced decks these days. I think it feels more personal and intimate this way, so I’m happy in that aspect. It was a bit thinner than I was hoping for though, so here’s to praying I won’t accidentally bend or crease one (something I almost did while shuffling the deck earlier).
  • My only real complaint at all for this deck might be the edges of the card stock. The cards are actually perforated and not cut, so you can see the “dots” or where the cards have separated from each other. Here’s a picture of it below, along with a close up. Most of them had little protruding bits that you could probably slice off with a cutter yourself if you wanted to… but a few of my cards actually had the bits torn inwards so it looked like there’s a small chip along the card’s edge. :\ Nothing too serious, and it wouldn’t have stopped me from buying the deck had I known about this… but still worth a mention.

And here’s a closer look:

  • On the other hand, I love the barely-there borders and how they don’t all have one uniform color either (as you can see in the few examples on the first pic I posted up top).
  • And finally, the artwork? I love it just as much as I had expected to. Having browsed the pictures of her cards extensively, these images were no surprise to me… but I’m so happy I was not disappointed. There have been a few instances in the past where I fell in love with a deck, looked at tons of pictures, but ended up having the cards fall flat when I have them in my hands. I didn’t have this problem for the Anna K. at all. They’re still so wonderfully expressive, and I simply love them! And personal plus points for how the various ways she had portrayed the cards actually fits right into my own views of the meanings. :)

I’ll probably have more thoughts once I’ve truly started to read with them, but for now, these are my initial impressions… which reminds me… I should probably check with her to see if it’s okay for me to scan and post individual card pictures of her deck here, to illustrate any readings I may do with it. Anyhow, if you’re looking for an expressive deck with RWS traditions (often with an interesting take) and tired of all the similar RWS renditions out on the market today, give this one a look. You won’t regret it!

Wow Tea! They are gorgeous!! It’s funny how I missed all about this beautiful deck on AE—probably because I’m always checking out the oracle section!
I went on her site, via your link, and absolutely fell in love with her artwork. I’d really like to order this deck too if it’s still available.
The perforated edges bug me a bit though, I must admit. Still, I don’t think I want to miss out on her beautiful art. They really call to me! lol
How have you found reading with them?

hugs,
Spirity

Hi Spirity!

They really are beautiful, aren’t they? Anna had 500 decks printed, and I think this was about the end of last year. She had said they should for sure last till summer according her estimation- I think there was a request for her to post a notice on AT if she was down to the last 50 decks. :D I would say if you really want it, you should definitely order one before it’s gone- that is unless the publishers finally give her deck a chance after seeing how popular her deck has become. Supposedly, the deck was rejected by the publishers… that’s why she went the self-publishing route. Something about her art or portrayal of the cards not being the kind the general public would appreciate, etc. *grumbles*

I’ve been told by a few regular readers of this deck that the perforated edges gets worn down after continued use, so that sounds hopeful. Someone also took an emery board to it and had good results, I think. I haven’t tried that nor have I read enough with the deck for the edges to wear down, but as you’ve also said… it really would be a shame to miss out on the deck! Some have also said their card edges didn’t look as bad as mine did, so you may get lucky with yours.

In terms of how well they read, I haven’t used it enough to confidently say how well they read for me personally yet… but my sister has been practicing dailies with them, and I sit with her everyday when she does (she’s a newbie to the Tarot so I’ve been helping her), and we’ve had very good results with the deck. They’re very expressive in a soft and almost calming way. I’m not sure how to explain it… but it’s not one of those decks that slaps the truth bluntly in my face (lol). It’s a gentle deck, but expressive all the same. :) I love the courts- I think their personalities really shine through in the scenes Anna placed them in.

If you haven’t already, you should check out all the cards at her site (not sure how many you’ve looked at). The 8 of Swords, 10 of Swords, a lot of the Wands, and the Aces (among many others) really stood out for me. Do keep in mind that the coloring of the actual cards came out darker in print though!

I recently got permission from Anna to post the pictures of her deck here when doing readings with the cards, so I’m hoping I’ll give it more of the attention it deserves soon. :)

I just found your blog per chance. You probably know it already, but in case you don’t: Anna has got her second edition printed, with a few changes (some cards are different, no more protruding bits at the edges…), and shipping is about to start

Hi I´m new to the site. But just wanted to mention that the cards a really beautiful and so expressive, I love them, the best tarot deck I have ever seen. I got mine only last week and there are no protruding sides at all. I want to get another copy before it´s too late.
