Deck: Blue Owl - Lenormand
Spread: Sylvie's No-Layout
I have a general policy on reading health matters, so this is a bit unusual for me. The following reading is done mainly for practice and a general insight, plus a clear understanding that a visit to the doctor’s is needed.
My sister’s been having a serious case of diarrhea ever since she came home from work today. Nothing is staying in, including water, but she refuses to see the doctor and wants to wait the night out first even though she seems to be spending a majority of it in the bathroom. She has no idea what the problem might be except for the fact that her stomach had been hurting all day, so I decided to draw a few cards for some info in the meantime.
I’m using Sylvie Steinbach’s No-Layout style of reading, except instead of fanning, I’m just flipping from the top after cutting the deck. I chose 05 The Tree for my focus card.

The cards are 08 Coffin + 04 House + 05 Tree + 01 Rider + 07 Snake
At first glance, when I saw the Coffin, I thought of the actual act of diarrhea at home (+ House) being about purging and all. Or it might just simply be saying that she’s been ill at home. I’m also keeping in mind that the Coffin could also denote a serious illness, but I don’t feel that’s the case here. I’m choosing, instead, to read the cards to the left as insight to her current predicament and the possible cause. The cards to the right will be read as insight to be revealed or what she can expect.
The Coffin, I think, could be saying that she’s eaten something that has already expired or gone bad. Coupled with the House, I’m inclined to think this is something she has eaten at home.
The Rider stumped me a bit as I couldn’t decide if it showed traveling (going to the hospital, maybe?) or perhaps it’s receiving insight on the problem (again, maybe a diagnosis from a doctor?). I think I read somewhere that the Rider could sometimes also mean recovery health-wise, but being coupled with the Snake might mean it’ll be a slow and challenging one. I can’t help but also wonder if the Snake is a warning that there’s a larger problem at hand that she needs to get checked out- specifically with the bowel system as the Snake could also mean the big intestines or the digestive system, which certainly makes a whole lot of sense in this case.
Since I’m new to the Lenormand, I don’t yet have much confidence in my reading so I’ll have to see how this goes. I’m really liking the way the Lenormand communicates though. It’s a bit similar to reading with regular playing cards, but I get the feeling I’m going to love it even more! :D In any case, I’ve insisted that my sister see the doctor first thing in the morning (if she continues to refuse seeing one right now), so I’ll update this with the results when I know more.
Update!
March 24, 2009: My sister went to the doctor’s first thing the following morning. The doctor wasn’t entirely sure what the cause was and said it could possibly be something bad she ate or even the stomach flu that’s been going around (even though she has no other symptoms of said flu). She was given a shot, some meds to take for a few days, and strict instructions on her diet until she feels better. It’s been about a week now, and while she’s no longer running to the bathroom every 5 minutes, my sister says her stomach still feels a little strange. It’s been a rather difficult week in general and she’s only just starting to feel better- which seems to fit with the reading. I’m not sure if the Snake could still mean more serious problems, so I’ve asked her to keep it in mind anyway and not ignore any signs of discomfort returning (she has a tendency to do that). Will update again if something else comes up!
